Councillor Alan Wright

I was extremely pleased to be elected recently to join Robert Oliver and Michael Dixon as Councillor representing the residents of St Chad's. Life has been a bit of a whirl since the election as there is so much to learn about being a Councillor. However I am now enjoying working with Robert and Michael for the benefit all residents in Herrington, Farrington and Lakeside. One of the greatest things I experienced during the election campaign was meeting people on their doorsteps and with the wonderful reception and best wishes I received.

For my job I am employed by the Go-Ahead Group as their Properties and Services Director. This has allowed me to acquire knowledge and experience on Planning and transport issues throughout the country which will help me in my new role as a Councillor for St Chad's.

I am 60 years of age and married with two sons and five grandchildren. We were all born in Sunderland and have lived in the City all of our lives. I was born and bred in Pallion into a family who's working roots were in the shipbuilding, glass making and mining industries. My chosen career was in the building industry which I began at Sunderland Public Works. I left the Public Works in 1973 at which time I joined the former Northern General Transport Company and worked in their Building's Section.

My interests include history, politics, watching sport, mainly football and cricket, reading, clay target shooting and walking. While enjoying history in general I have an interest in the local history of Sunderland and have recently attended my first Herrington Heritage society meeting . Prior to being chosen to stand in May's election I had helped Robert and Michael with Newsletter and leaflet deliveries in the ward. Previously I had helped the local association in other areas of the town.

Along with Robert and Michael I firmly believe that three Conservative Councillors, working together will form a strong base for improving the representation of the residents of St Chad's.
