Councillor Michael Dixon
For my job I am employed full-time as a Chartered Surveyor and like many of you I work quite long hours. But it is an ideal job because I meet so many different people on a daily basis, with their varied personalities and issues. This helps me enormously in my work as your Councillor. To combine the two roles is a challenge but I genuinely like to listen to the views and hear about the lives of others.
To give you some background about myself, I have been married for over thirty years, with three children, all of us were born in Sunderland and always lived in the City. My interests include football, summer flat horse racing and when there is time watching old spy/thriller films. I am a member of the Royalty Theatre in Sunderland and like Robert and Alan attend the Herrington Heritage Society which meets at the Middle Herrington Church Hall, Crow Lane. On a Sunday I play an active role at St Ignatius Church, Sunderland. I do like travelling and have been fortunate enough to visit some very interestinging countries since 1979 including India, the old Soviet Union, Poland and Slovakia. On my travels in Europe I consider it a duty and a necessity to visit any nearby second world war concentration camps and this I have done on several occasions throughout the years.
One thing I will always be pleased about was my decision many years ago to take a degree course at the then Sunderland Polytechnic, studying politics and history. This part-time study has left me with a feeling of total admiration for people, who in this more hectic period of time, try to obtain any type of qualification, especially those who are still at work and have to help run a home. It also taught me to respect the other person's political point of view...as long as they respect mine!
I have enjoyed working closely with Robert and now Alan in our efforts on behalf of ward residents and this we will strive to do in the years ahead. We all have a very close interest in both local and national politics. Most importantly we like each other's company, with each supporting the other on all occasions.
